NIV: But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.
NAS: yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away.
KJV: Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
GWT: Since he doesn't have any root, he lasts only a little while. When suffering or persecution comes along because of the word, he immediately falls [from faith].
