NIV: the one who opened the pit must pay the owner for the loss and take the dead animal in exchange.
NAS: the owner of the pit shall make restitution; he shall give money to its owner, and the dead animal shall become his.
KJV: The owner of the pit shall make it good, and give money unto the owner of them; and the dead beast shall be his.
GWT: the owner of the cistern must make up for the loss. He must pay money to the animal's owner, and then the dead animal will be his.
