NIV:  Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.
NAS:  However, the men rowed desperately to return to land but they could not, for the sea was becoming even stormier against them.
KJV:  Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.
GWT:  Instead, the men tried to row harder to get the ship back to shore, but they couldn't do it. The storm was getting worse.
ASV:  Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not: for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.
